About this deal

Getting’ the job done just got more interesting. The Crime & Punishment Game Booster for Firefly: The Game adds a whole heap of new troubles to the ‘Verse. The anniversary release also swaps out the original board game’s standard pieces for some deluxe components, most notably 15 hand-painted resin ship miniatures to represent the vessels flying around the system. That whole damn ‘verse is depicted on a new neoprene mat, with custom ship dice also among the upgrades. I think a few more games may see some other solo variations to the rules. I am thinking of a random chance of removal of discard items from the game, or additional movement for the Cutter and Cruiser. We shall see... This beautiful 6’ x 4’ play surface is inspired by the spectacular game tables that GF9 commissions for our events. This game mat is miles more worthy than any table you’d play your games of Firefly on and is sure to become an object of extreme sentimental value. “Vera” is the ultimate Firefly: The Game playing surface. In Firefly: Misbehavin', players control different factions of the Firefly 'Verse, from the criminal enterprises of Badger or Niska, to the self-righteous Alliance, and even Serenity as Mal attempts to find a crew and keep flyin'

John-Paul dives into the two new expansions: The Respectable Folk set includes companion Inara Serra and preacher Shepherd Book while the Wanted Fugitives set includes physician Simon Tam and the gifted River Tam. Each potential new Crew Member adds new skills and abilities to your adventures. Each Crew Expansion comes with four Crew miniatures (in both Casual and Heroic poses), two double-sided Crew cards, ten Equipment cards, two new Jobs and the box bottom also doubles as a new building.Fifty new cards, adds a number of jobs/equipment which reward specializing your crew. Surprisingly good expansion, for being so small. So maybe that was just a coincidence. We get together another time and play one of the other box scenarios. And I learn how to break the game and win every time. Do you want to know how to do it? Seriously, in the next couple sentences I will spoil the game for you, and give you the secret to winning. Are you sure you want to know? Yes? Yes? SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But this game mat ain’t the only shiny thing to add to your game! Now your control console gets an upgrade with the Cargo Hold “Shiny” Token Set. Each set contains a set of full-color laser-cut acrylic tokens to upgrade one player’s ship card. These durable plastic tokens make every spot in your Cargo Hold shiny! Stand out from other captains with GF9’s newest Firefly accessory! The Cargo Hold Shiny Token Set is available in the online store. In short, Solo games for Firefly Adventures are not only about beating the mission, but about enjoying the story that gets told and getting immersed in that story for a couple of hours. That probably sounds goofy, but that's how I roll!

The first thing I modified was the movement of the Alliance Cruiser and the Reaver Cutter. I decided that a random movement was appropriate. I numbered the spaces they could go and randomly rolled (if this was more than 6 then I used two dice with the first space being a two on the dice). This seemed to work, but in my next game I will change this to move towards my ship where possible to make it a bit more cutthroat. There are a few other rules such as discarding a keeper and drawing three new cards, or getting free action cards and getting cards if you have no hand. Although again not overly thematic these do seem a little different from other versions of Fluxx. In my next game I am going to count the number of turns I play, which will set a benchmark to try and beat the next time round, setting a new challenge time I play. I didn’t count the first time round, and I would encourage you to do so if you are like minded. Firefly: The Game isn’t the first board game based on a TV show we’ve reviewed here on Board Game Quest. A while ago we took a look at the Battlestar Galactica board game (spoiler alert: it’s phenomenal) and were able to state that you don’t have to be a fan of the show to love the board game. Does Firefly fall into the same mold? I’d say yes, but not as strongly.

The ‘verse is a big place and we want you to help fill it! Over the next month we want you to send us your own Jobs for Firefly Adventures: Brigands and Browncoats . As I’ve already said, the rules vary depending on what cards are played, indeed this means that it is possible, in theory, to play an entire game of Fluxx without changing the draw one play one rule – but that would make a very dull game. Firefly Fluxx comes with the same rule variations as the other versions of Fluxx, including drawing more than one card and playing more than one card. Goals are also taken from the show, either in a general theme or a specific aspect of Firefly, such as; “No power in the ‘verse can stop me,” or the Washburns or Browncoats all very familiar to those who watch the show. There is a small secret joy to completing a goal linked to your favourite episode or scene. Or do you want to explore the WHOLE ‘Verse? Then you’ll love the ‘Blue Sun’ and ‘Kalidasa’ expansions which extends the board on both ends and adds a heap more content from ‘Serenity’ including new missions and new items to add to your shops. Fair warning – if you’re struggling to fit the base game on your table, you might need to buy a bigger table before you buy these board expansions! In 2002, director Joss Whedon, introduced sci fi fans to Firefly. Named after an in-show class of spaceship, this excellent series lasted only 14 episodes before it was cancelled by Fox. Firefly the Game drags tabletop gaming firmly into the Firefly universe. Well-themed, and cleverly implemented, it places you in the Captain’s seat of your very own Firefly and sends you out into the ‘verse.

Our graphics team did some of their visual wizardry and Andrew Haught, one of the original Firefly Adventures writers, lent his expertise to make this the best damn rulebook in the verse. To enter you need to fill out the contest entry form found here: Gale Force 9 Firefly Contest Entry!

After the Earth was used up, we found a new solar system and hundreds of new Earths were terra-formed and colonized. The central planets formed the Alliance and decided all the planets had to join under their rule. There was some disagreement on that point. After the War, many of the Independents who had fought and lost drifted to the edges of the system, far from Alliance control. Out here, people struggled to get by with the most basic technologies; a ship would bring you work, a gun would help you keep it. A captain's goal was simple: find a crew, find a job, keep flying.”– Shepherd Derrial Book
